WEEK 1 2018 XC (Hughson/Pitman Scrimmage; Jaguar Inv; Lagoon Valley; Thunder 2mi; Sierra Inv)

This is an odd time of the season when some teams are completing their third/fourth races and so many others have yet to race even once.

WED 8/29 HUGHSON/PITMAN SCRIMMAGE, Centennial Park, Hughson
This meet is Hughson traditional intrasquad meet. This year they invited Pitman to join the party. The two teams were split up into 7 different teams. It was an interesting early season idea that added some levity and a different tone to the meet. For these results I have "separated the 7 different teams back into their normal school teams. Everybody ran 2 miles on a flat and fast course.

BOYS
Team-wise Hughson took down the Pride 27 to 40 and that was even without #1 runner Austin Hoach.
On the unfamiliar course Jayson Martin takes the win (barely). Miguel Ramos looked like he is ready to compete in the TVL this season.

1. Jayson Martin (Pitman) 10:54.8
2. Miguel Ramos (Hughson) 10:55

THUR 8/30 JAGUAR INV, Eagal Lakes, Tracy
Competing StanCo teams were Central Catholic, Patterson, Oakdale, Orestimba, and Waterford. It seemed warmed out on the course than the actual temperature indicated. The course was certainly dusty and the times are not particularly fast. Given all that there were was solid results. It is always fun to watch small-school stars Jaecelyn Romero and Madeline Tree go head to head. Tree ran great last week in Lodi. This week it was Romero. Jonathan Staley has another great race. I suspect he is feeling the pressure from Frosh teammate Evan Espinoza. Newcomers Simon Appel and  Hannah Beth Norman are pleasant surprises at Oakdale. It will be exciting to see them improve as the season continues. Ada Jack and Dustin Chavez have both improved a lot.

SAT 9/1 LAGOON VALLEY, Lagoon Valley Park, Vacaville
The only competing StanCo team was Big Valley Christian. Billed as one of the toughest courses in Northern California, I am sure that anyone who has ever run here would agree. Between the dust, the heat, and of course the two giant hills, this course is challenging.

SAT 9/1 SIERRA INV, Sierra College, Rocklin
Competing StanCo team was Waterford and they only took a few athletes. I remember this course as being like Willow Hills in that it was trails over rolling hills. It is necessary to be able to shift gears rapidly in order to be successful

  1. Jaecelyn ran JV because we got there late. She barely missed her race, but was able to run JV instead.
