WEEK 0 2018 XC (Pitman v Turlock Scrimmage; Lodi Flame Inv)

Both Orestimba and Waterford ran in a scrimmage? meet a week back; but since it was supposedly a scrimmage, and they both ran this week too, I didn't include those results.

WED 8/22 TURLOCK V PITMAN SCRIMMAGE @ Donnelly Park, Turlock
Competing StanCo teams were Turlock and some Pitman.

VARSITY GIRLS

welcome to StanCo XC Camilla
1. Camilla Staphens (Pitman) 19:49
2. Sofia Andres (Turlock) 20:07
3. Stefanie Rodriguez (Pitman) 21:31
4. Cynthia Varela (Turlock) 22:04
5. Phoebe Santos (Turlock) 22:09

VARSITY BOYS
Alvarez for the win
1. Uriel Alvarez (Turlock) 17:14
2. Jayson Martin (Pitman) 17:34
3. Brody Vicchione (Turlock) 17:35
4. Sergio Mazon (Turlock) 18:00
5. Eric Hernandez (Turlock) 18:03
6. Gavin Valenzuela (Turlock) 18:21
7. Salvador Ramirez (Pitman) 18:22
8. Pablo Guizar (Turlock) 18:42
9. Nate Haynam (Turlock) 18:45
10. Nick Santos (Turlock) 18:47

Take aways for me from this meet: Uriel Alvarez defended his title from last year, but last year he only ran 18:57 for the win. He was almost 2 min faster this year. In fact the top ten boys all ran faster than last year's winning time. The top Pitman Boys and girls all ran a difficult hill workout the previous day, and most took this meet off. Those that did run, like Martin, were dead tired. So it is difficult to compare the two teams at this point. However with so much youth on the Turlock team it is good to see the veteran, Uriel Alvarez stepping up to lead his team. Under his leadership the Bulldogs maybe up to the task of the experienced Gregori team.

On the lady's side I had the top Bulldog returning athlete, Sofia Andres, on the PreSeason All-StanCo team. Her time was 1:40 faster than last year's time in this meet. However even with this huge improvement she would place second to frosh-phenom, Camilla Stephens of Pitman. I am excited to see how the combo of Mavleen Mann and Camilla stack up against the top ladies from Downey, MoHi, and Gregori (see below)

FRI 8/24  LODI FLAME INV @ Lodi Lake, Lodi
This is the first official meet of the season. Competing StanCo teams were Gregori, Orestimba, Riverbank, and Waterford. I want to point out that the "official" results are flawed. I know that one Ripon VB finished in the top ten, but some how was missed in the results. The Ripon coach says that there are more errors, so take the results as you will.

VARSITY GIRLS
Team-wise Gregori placed 5th
Kackley places a very strong second
 2. Madison Kackley (Gregori) 19:43

49. Itxel Mendez (Gregori) 23:13

VARSITY BOYS
Team-wise Gregori placed 2nd in the official results; 19-Waterford; 20-RBK; 22-Orestimba
Duchala is ready to lead the Jags
4. Jack Duchala (Gregori) 16:51
25. Jonathan Staley (Waterford) 17:43
28. Spencer Jeppson (Gregori) 17:47
35. Carter Mannon (Gregori) 17:58
45. Aidan Wells (Gregori) 18:12
48. Evan Espinoza (Waterford) 18:15

Staley with a huge improvement
Take aways for me from this meet: This was only Briseida fifth? race in a year...she has broken her foot twice in that time. Even with all that lost time she still ran 3 seconds faster than last year. Kackley looked good. Eva improved almost two min from this meet last year and Madeline Tree improved about 90 seconds. Team-wise the Lady Jags look great up front. Huge props to Jonathan Staley. He ran over 90 secs faster than he did last year AND beat all the Jags except Duchala (who BTW was about 30 secs faster than last year). On a side note I am passing on Runner of the Week because so few team/athletes were in action
