This race featured two of the top small school teams in the Sac Joaquin Section: Dixon and Hughson, plus a strong Sacred Heart Cathedral squad from the powerhouse West Catholic League of the Central Coast Section.
From the gun, a fast early pace was set by runners dashing for the mud pit preme, which is located about 850 meters into the course. Despite the tight twists and turns, the hay bales, the soft grass and the mud pit, the leaders reached the 1k mark at about 3:07. At this point, the lead pack consisted of Zach Morrett of Hughson, Gonzalo Morales of Dixon, Coy Chance of Dixon, Isaac Gonzales of Pitman, and Antonio Suarez of Sacred Heart Cathedral. Heading into the "fishbowl" section of Fontana Ranch Park, Morrett made a hard surge, which Morales covered and the two began to pull away from the rest of the field. Over the top of our custom built hill, Morrett held about a 5 yard lead over Morales. The race really opened up once the runners entered the Hughson Community Arboretum. The entrance runs through a narrow gate, followed by 3 sharp turns and 2 sets of hay bales. Morrett used the break in rhythm to open up a gap that he never relinquished

In the team battle, Hughson's pack moved strongly though the middle section of the course and held a solid advantage over Dixon and Sacred Heart at the half way point. Dixon runners Cody Francesci and Justin Kemper ran strongly over the last 2k however to eat into the advantage of the Huskies. By the end of the race, Hughson won the position battles at the #1 runner position and the #5 runner position, while Dixon won the position battle for the second, third, and fourth runners.
In the final score, it was Hughson's depth that won the day. The Huskies put all 7 runners in the chute before any other team had 5 in.
Since it was our first time on this course layout, time comparison is difficult, but it seems that the top runners were averaging about 5-10 seconds slower per kilometer than they had been for most of the season.

Varsity Girls--write up courtesy of Hughson Coach Bernard:
This race was a little shorter on drama than was the boys race.
Last year's frosh soph champion, Jasmine Loyola of Tokay grabbed an early lead and never relinquished it en route to a 13 second victory. Running strong for second was freshman newcomer Courtney Robinson of Liberty Ranch. Courtney's time, seems to be equal to about 20 minutes for 5k on a course such as Woodward Park or Legion Park. This is a fine result for a freshman and should put her in the mix at the Sac Joaquin Section Division 4 meet.
In the team battle, Tokay's top 4 gave them a sizable advantage over the rest of the field that they used to score a very low 35 points for victory. Dixon and Sacred Heart battled mightily for the second spot, with Dixon coming out ahead, 60-62. Sacred Heart had 6 runners in the chute before Dixon's 5th, but didn't have quite enough firepower up front to match Dixon's top 3 of Claudia Robinson, Nikki Torres, and Lauren Foster.

Roosevelt Roughrider Invitational (Woodward Park, Fresno)
This was the second shot for local teams with aspirations of qualifying for State to survey the Woodward Pak course. Riverbank was the lone StanCo team to take advantage of this race. Since this meet was held Friday afternoon the conditions were a bit warm. Both RBK teams competed well and each finished 6th in their respective small school divisions.

For the Boys:
The boys placed 6th and finished with the exact same total team time (1:26:56) that Hughson had in last week's Clovis Inv. The Section competition between Riverbank, Hughson, and Dixon for the final State qualifying spot should be an exciting one.
9. Luis Figueroa 16:41
21. Jonathen Beliera 16:59
36. Adrian Salazar 17:28
44. Moises Gomez 17:39

Bella Vista Bronco Distance Carnival (Willow Hills Res, Folsom)
In past years this was a very popular meet for local teams. This year only Patterson and Modesto Christian participated.
For the boys Nathan Stanton (Patterson) ran an impressive 16:29 to place 5th in the small school race. To demonstrate just what a strong time this was...he would have been 8th in the large school race. He beat Josh Spooner (Sierra) by 25 secs and Alex Norling (Ripon) by 57 secs.
For the girls Meagan Warwick (Modesto Christian) placed 37th in 22:27 and sister Nicole placed 48th in 22:59.
