MMC Cluster 3

This past Wednesday the MMC schools met to do battle for the third time this season at Davis Community Park. In the previous two meetings Gregori had prevailed in both the VG and VB races. In this third session Modesto brought its “A” game, and it produced one of the closest and most exciting MMC meets I have ever seen. Literally the outcome of both varsity races hung in the balance just feet from the finish line.
Mendoza and Torres bolt to the front in the VG race

In the VG race the upfront positions were much the same as past cluster meets. Mya Torres (Gregori) took the pace from the gun with Savannah Mendoza (Modesto) and Torrey Maravilla (Gregori) is close pursuit. However, it was the team points that shifted throughout the race. For this meet Modesto moved up Kerry Young from the F/S to the varsity. She would ultimately finish a strong 11th and her race (among others) bolstered Modesto. The final outcome was Gregori 27, Modesto 28. A’kia Roland, showing her 800m speed, had a lightning finish to pass several runners which led to Gregori’s narrow victory.

The start of the VB race

If the VG race was close…the VB race was even closer. Up front, the same pack as previous meets vied for the lead. Marc Alania and Kaleb Hallack (Modesto) sparred with Evan Moses, Alec Villagomez, Nick Sanders, and Mario Medina (Gregori) in the lead pack. For much of the race it appeared to be another Gregori route. However as the race progressed Villagomez and Sanders fell from the front group, and a pack of MoHi runners including Brandon Williams and James DeLaO were closed in. Ultimately the race would be decided within inches of the finish line when Villagomez held off DeLao, Jonathan Alcantara out kicked Brandon Williams, and Sanders passed Isaih Avila-DeLaCruz. In spite of placing 7 runners in the top 12 (that sounds pretty impressive to me), MoHi came up on the losing end of the 27 to 28 score.
