Weekend Action (9/14/13) Sierra and Lowell Inv

Most of the county's teams were in action this weekend. The larger share of the teams were in action at Legion Park in Modesto (Oakdale, Waterford, Big Valley, Valley Charter, Turlock, Pitman, Modesto, Downey, Enochs, Patterson, Ceres, Johansen, and Modesto Christian). Beyer, Gregori and Hughson traveled to Golden Gate Park, SF to try their luck at the Lowell Invitational. Overall there were some solid early season times and some hints at the team and individual successes to come.

Both Gregori and Hughson turned in strong team results. The Gregori boys may finally be mature enough to take on top dog MoHi for the MMC title. The Hughson boys have made progress since last week's TVL meet but still have a lot of work to do to catch Riverbank. The Gregori girls, bolstered by two newcomers, may have enough firepower to overtake Modesto in the MMC too.

Just in case anyone was wondering about the future of running at Gregori as their runners gradually get older...they won the Frosh championship at this year's Lowell Inv (so they are reloaded for the future).

COMPLETE RESULTS

Sierra Inv (Legion Park, Modesto)
The competition (especially in the girl's races) and with regards to depth seemed to be down this year. Several strong regional schools (Lodi, Sonora, and Manteca) chose to compete in meets in the Sacramento area. Other local school ran only limited entries (Modesto, Downey). With all of that said there were some strong marks turned in on the dry, mostly flat circuit beside the river.

Varsity Girls (5K)
Warwick twins improve 40 sec on this course in one week. They have already shown that they can run 800m and are still figuring out the longer distance.

Other Races
Kristin Aguilar (Oakdale 13:32 and Kerry Young (Modesto) 13:56 but had a solid races in their initial XC outings. Hailey Rodriguez (Enochs) 13:28 looked good in the soph race and could help to shore up Enochs' VG team. The Enochs soph boys looked very good as a unit winning the soph team title. If their coach choose to keep them down at the F/S level for league meets, it will be an interesting matchup between them and the Gregori 9th graders.

  1. For anybody interested in what a really good team looks like....Bellarmine's boys team won the first heat with their top 5 guys averageing 15:14 (probably equal to about 16:08 for 5k). Their B team won the second heat, with runners 8-12 averaging 15:46 (about 16:40 for 5k). It would be nice to see a team from the north finally win Division 1 at state even if it isn't local or even from our section.
