The CCC's best runners met for the first time this year at Atwater. It was a tough day for both the Turlock and Pitman runners. Makenzie Salyer (Turlock) was the only StanCo female runner to crack the top 15. She placed a solid 4th with a time of 20:44 over the 3 mi course. For the boys Isaac Gonzalez (Pitman) was an impressive 2nd place (16:40) and Rex Doo (Turlock) was 6th in 17:00.

Frogtown at Calaveras County Fairgrounds 3mi
Not very long ago this was one of the premier meets in the section. All of the StanCo teams would participate in order to prepare their runners for the rigors of the sub-section course. Maybe it was the difficulty of the course or the usually very hot weather, but now most of the county's teams steer clear of this event and I personally find that to be unfortunate.
This year only Pitman, Ceres, Johansen, and Waterford made the journey up to the foothills for what was some unseasonably cool weather. Isaac Gonzalez (Pitman) placed a respectable 13th (17:05) as the only local runner of note.

While many other teams from the county were spread out across the globe competing this weekend, The Gregori Jaguars were running hard continuing their season's journey down "the road to a berth in the State Meet."
I liked the photo and just thought that I would share.
Fantastic stuff from RBK....looking forward to our meet on Thursday! I can tell you why we (and probably other teams) steer clear of this meet. It is not the difficulty of the course. It is the steep rutted downhills. We always come out of that meet with someone banged up and it seems like I see an ambulance go out on the course every year.
ReplyDeleteIn the past, we've gone up the hill for the purpose of previewing the subsection course. Anymore, especially with 10 teams qualifying past sub sections, there is no need for us to do so. Our boys team is good enough where we can go and run a tempo effort at subs (just like all of the other decent teams do) and still easily qualify for sections. Our girls team is currently not even full, so there isn't a whole lot of reason for us to go up there and risk injury with the ladies either. If they altered the two main downhills in the second mile, we'd be back up there in a heartbeat.
When I said "this meet" I was referring to frogtown.
DeleteJoel, I do understand that aspect. Two years ago, when I was coaching, My daughter was in 5th in the VG race. The Folsom coach was on the course going up one of the hills when my daughter crested the hill and saw him. She sidestepped him and lost her footing. She literally land at my feet after tumbling to the bottom. She still has a 6 inch burn scar on the side of her belly where her jersey burned to her skin from the fall. With that said, most of the county's schools aren't so secure in qualifying as your team.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree. Being in D4 gives us some breathing room. I suppose what I'd really like to see is a course that is less dangerous.
ReplyDeleteBTW, will you be out at the TVL #2 meet tomorrow? There should be some very fast racing with the nice weather and all.
