For the eighth year I am naming an All StanCo XC team. Even though I have done this before, there was nothing normal about this XC season and thus this list. First of all the season ended 5 months late. Secondly, it was an extremely short season with no championship meets. Thirdly there were no invitationals and very little mixing of the different leagues' teams. All of these factors made comparing runners very difficult.
The past several years I have sent ballots to the county's coaches. They would vote and therefore select the team. However since they don't know all of the other runners most of the comparison was done by looking at the results of the SubSect and Section meets. Since this year had neither, ballots seemed purposeless and comparison by the coaches impossible. I fully plan to reinstate that process once things are back to "normal."
So how did I make the selections? Well for one, I saw every StanCo team (and all of these runners) compete as I attended 17 meets in 4.5 weeks. Upon inspection of the results, it seems that the 5K Gregori course and the 5K WAC River Bluff course and the 5K TVL/SAL River Bluff course all ran very close to the same (time-wise). Additionally the Pitman 3 mi course ran about 1 min faster for the VB and at least 1:30 fast for VG. Everyone on this list ran either at Gregori, or one of the River Bluff courses (some ran on two of the 3). The exception was the Oakdale runners. Here I looked and their times and used my "eyes." Yes they really are that good--2 of them were voted onto the team last year.
So agree with it or not this is the 2020 All StanCo team. It was a short, strange season; but these athletes made the most of the opportunity.
# *HALEIGH HUMBLE (Oakdale) 11th—led Oakdale to undefeated VOL championship. Ran 19:29 on Oakdale’s 3mi course
* MACI DAY (Pitman) 10th—Won CCAL 1 and 2 Pitman Tri meets. Only loss of the season was to Kackley. Ran 18:51 over Pitman 3mi course. Ran 20:31 at Gregori 5K. Won County meet at River Bluff in 20:17
MELISSA BARAJAS (Modesto) 11th—3rd best CCAL runner, only losing to Kackley and Day. Ran 19:03 at Pitman and 21:22 over Gregori 5K course.
* CHLOE COOK (Gregori) 10th—was 4th best in CCAL this year. Ran 20:31 over Gregori 5K course
CHARLOTTE LASKA (Pitman) 11th—ran 20:51 over Gregori 5K and 19:32 at Pitman 3 mi. Placed 2nd in County at River Bluff 5K in 20:49
ISABELA MORENO (Downey) 11th—ran 22:02 over Gregori 5K and 20:43 over Pitman 3mi course
* FATIMA CHAVEZ (Turlock) 12th—was in top 4 in all CCAL Tri meets. Ran 20:59 over Pitman 3mi course and 22:18 over Gregori 5K
TAYLOR SCHEUBER (Hughson) 11th—won SAL/TVL 3 in 22:16 over River Bluff 5K. Placed 3rd at County in 22:20
LEXIE GOMEZ (Gregori) 10th—began the year slowly but ultimately ran 21:49 over the Gregori 5K course
EFREN SANCHEZ (Pitman) 11th—went undefeated winning all CCAL Tri meets and the County Meet. He ran 17:08 at River Bluff 5K and 17:10 at Gregori 5K. Also, he ran 16:08 over Pitman 3mi course
NATE OLSEN (Beyer) 10th—went undefeated in WAC competition. Ran 16:46 on WAC 5K course at River Bluff.
CHRISTIAN BALDERAS (Pitman) 12th-- placed 2nd in County Meet in 17:09 over River Bluff 5K. Also, ran 16:30 on Pitman 3mi.
CALEB CAVANAUGH (Oakdale) 10th—led the Mustangs to 2nd place in the VOL. He ran 15:28 over the Oakdale 3mi course.
JOSEPH LIGHTHALL (Hughson) 10th—won SAL/TVL 1 and 2. Placed 3rd in County Meet in 17:25 over River Bluff 5K
SERGIO MAZON (Turlock) 12th—won CCAL Gregori Tri 2 in 17:48 for 5k. Also, ran 16:37 on Pitman 3mi course
BRODY VECHIONE (Turlock) 11th—won CCAL Pitman Tri 3 in 16:37 over 3mi course. Ran 17:54 over Gregori 5K
GARY LETEIPA (Beyer) 11th—placed 4th at WAC Championship Meet over WAC River Bluff 5K course, 17:42
GERARDO RAMIREZ MARTINEZ (Grace Davis) 11th—placed 3rd at the WAC Championship Meet in 17:42 over WAC River Bluff course. Placed 8th at County Meet in 18:04
DOMINIC ROBLES (Oakdale) 12th—was Oakdale’s #2/3 runner. Ran 15:56 for 3mi on Oakdale’s course.
