In the past this blog has done various things to recognize the top runners from the county for the past season. Some years a Runner of the Year was named. Some years it was a top seven. Last year it was nothing at all. Sometimes the selection has been swirled in controversy and disagreement. Two years ago the selection of the top runner fostered such ill feelings by some readers that it soured the process (that is partially why there was no selection(s) last year...)
With all that said, I am looking forward to a new era. I intend to select the top 10 StanCo XC girls and 10 boys this year and on into future years. I know that my selections will not all be universal choices. I also know that there will be deserving runners who do not make the cut. No list will ever be agreeable to everyone, but the recognition of these 20 fine athletes is 18 more than the Modesto Bee dares to mention.
Tonight is the girls' list and tomorrow will be the boys'. I will emphasize that THEY ARE IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER!
