Sub Sections at Frogtown

A week prior to the subsection meet the weather appeared that it might be cold and rainy...that prediction fizzled leaving the bone dry course ripe to turn into the modern dust bowl. Multiple runners suffered through asthmatic issues created by the warm and dusty conditions.

Nathan Stanton
The top StanCo male runners took care of business. Nathan Stanton (Patterson) turned in the fasted time for the group (16:47) in placing 7th in the D3 race.
Marc Alania

Top MMC runner Marc Alania (Modesto) ran 16:51 in placing 7th in the D1 race. To illustrate the disparity in the competitive level up front, Mario Medina (Gregori) ran 16:56 but was only 25th in the ultra-fast D2 race. Conversely, Zach Morrett (Hughson) was able to coast to 6th place in the D4 race in 17:13.
Mario Medina

There were 17 StanCo VB runners who broke 18 min:
1. Nathan Stanton (Patterson) 16:47
2. Marc Alania (Modesto) 16:51
3. Mario Medina (Gregori) 16:56
4. Alec Villagomez (Gregori) 17:08
5. Isaac Gonzalez (Pitman) 17:11
6. Zach Morrett (Hughson) 17:13
7. Luis Figueroa (Riverbank) 17:23
8. Brandon Williams (Modesto) 17:32
9. Jonathen Beliera (Riverbank) 17:34
10. Andrew Williams (modesto) 17:43
11. Christian McCraig (Modesto) 17:45
12. Anthony Arauza (Gregori) 17:48
13. Rex Doo (Turlock) 17:50
14. Elijah Watkins (Hughson) 17:51
14. James DeLaO (Modesto) 17:51
14. Kaleb Hallack (Modesto) 17:51
17. Nick Sanders (Gregori) 17:53

It is somewhat difficult to compare team results. Some teams like Hughson and Riverbank felt secure enough in their chances of qualifying that they held out injured runners. Both Gregori and Modesto had runners suffer through terrible races...As it ended up Modesto's total team time nosed out Gregori's by a mere 5 seconds. They both qualified in their divisions. Modesto was 6th in D1 and Gregori was 8th in D2 (it should be noted that on the day 5 of the 6 fastest teams came out of the D2 race). Hughson won the D4 race with Riverbank close behind. Both of those teams qualified out of D4.
Mikayla Florez

For the girls Mikaya Florez (Riverbank) ran away with the D4 title and by far the fastest StanCo female time of the day. Behind her the MMC champion Savannah Mendoza (Modesto) qualified out of the D1 race with the second fastest StanCo time.
Savannah Mendoza
There were 13 StanCo VG who broke 22 min:
1. Mikayla Florez (Riverbank) 19:28
2. Savannah Mendoza (Modesto) 20:29
3. Lauren Stanislaw (Beyer) 20:53
4. Brianna Fillpot (Gregori) 20:58
5. Lupe Ventura (Patterson) 21:08
6. Sonia Perez (Modesto) 21:31
7. Keana Viss (Enochs) 21:39
8. Torry Maravilla (Gregori) 21:41
9. Sabrina Garcia (Riverbank) 21:43
10. Joslyn Beliera (Riverbank) 21:45
11. Haley Richardson (Riverbank) 21:48
12. Kimberly Ruvalcaba (Riverbank) 21:55
13. Nicole Warwick (Modesto Christian) 21:59
RBK's #2--#5 runners
Team-wise Riverbank won the D4 race to qualify. Their effort, although controlled, landed them with the 16th best team time on the day out of 87 teams. Gregori the MMC champion did not qualify in the D2 race. Their top runner Mya Torres pulled out of the race at about the mile mark with a quad injury. Modesto and Downey, the 3rd and 4th ranked county teams split their top runners between the varsity and F/S races (it is unlikely that either would have qualified in the D1 race even with all of the runners together). Turlock's chances collapsed when their top runner Makenzie Salyer quit the race just beyond the 2 mile mark. Modesto Christian scraped a team together and won the D5 race behind the up front strength of the three Warwick sisters!

  1. Add to the fact that in D4, there is a large disparity between the top 4 teams and the rest of the section. I know that we and RBK didn't run hard at all, in addition to holding out a runner. For Christian Brothers, they had a kid DNF (17:05 5k at Clovis guy, Elmer Lizarde). Dixon trained through the meet, running super hard during the week leading up. It looks like Ripon kind of cruised also.

D2 has always been the strongest division in the section (at least in my time coaching). It is no surprise that they had the lions share of the fastest times. Nobody can afford to cruise in that division or else they risk staying home for finals.
