2025 XC Week 4 (CCC 1; CCAL 1; VOL 1; MLL 1; Woodbridge; Frogtown)

This was a busy week with 4 leagues meeting for the first time. Additionally Frogtown is always a full day for me with half of the StanCo schools competing. Woodbridge is perhaps the most elite XC meet in the country producing crazy fast times and fierce competition.

TUE 9/16 CCC 1 @ Golden Valley HS, Merced
There were no competing StanCo schools, but they are all MerCo schools. Now that I am retired I will be expanding my coverage area a bit to sometimes include these schools too since they are also eligible for my scholarships in the Spring. The varsity races were 5K

WED 9/17 CCAL 1 @ TRRP, Modesto
The competing StanCo teams were Turlock, Pitman, Modesto, Downey, Enochs, and Gregori. I found this meet to be disappointing. Turlock coasted because they were going to Woodbridge (I get it but it is disappointing to watch). Downey kept out their best boy for the same reason. The extreme heat definitely was a big factor. I would normally consider 16:30 (for a boy) and sub 20:00 (for a girl) to be a top mark. Well you can see the results. I am hopeful that as the season progresses so will the competitiveness. The varsity races were 5K.

WED 9/17 VOL 1 @ Mistlin Park, Ripon
The competing StanCo schools are Oakdale, Patterson, and Central Catholic. I am sure that heat played a big role in the finish times. The varsity races were 3mi.

WED 9/17 MLL 1 @ Frogtown, Angels Camp
The competing StanCo teams were Riverbank and Big Valley. Like the other Wednesday meets, I am sure that heat was a big factor. Unlike the other meets, MLL runners had to contend with the hills and dust also. Summerville VBs knocking off Riverbank was the big story here. The varsity races were 3mi.

FRI/SAT 9/19 and 9/20 Woodbridge @ Great Park, Irvine
The competing StanCo teams were Turlock, Downey, and Riverbank. These races are all 3 miles (that what it is billed as anyway) and it is lightning fast. For most runners it will be their HS best ever time. I have added a few times from NonStanCo (but locally known) runners for added comparison. The "color names" on the races are supposed to align with divisions...but Turlock was in "red" which says D3 and Downey and Hilmar were in "Gold" which say D2, but Downey is D1 and Hilmar is D4...Turlock is D1 so the color matching with division is suspect. Never-the-less the course was the same for everyone regardless of day, race, color, or division so the times are directly comparable.

SAT 9/20 Bret Harte/Frogtown Inv @ Calaveras County Fairgrounds, Angels Camp
The competing StanCo teams were Central Catholic, Ceres, Central Valley, Pitman, Grace Davis, Hughson, Johansen, Oakdale, Orestimba, Turlock Christian, Vanguard, Waterford. The varsity races were 3mi. The participation in this meet continues to decline. Well there were 80 odd teams BUT the heavy hitters in the SJS were mostly missing...case in point Oakdale won the SS VG with there #2 girl again not finishing the race. There is likely a health issue there the supercedes the importance of any race. For the SSVB Oakdale won again with out at least two of their top 5 runners for unknown (to me, well I didn' ask) reasons. Hughson pulled everyone back and used the meet like a workout, so don't use this meet to underestimate what they are capable of doing. Pitman's girls were missing there #1 (for the second meet this season) who likely would have beaten Nguyen Marquez for the LSVG crown. Pitman's boys continue to be an enigma to me as there cumulative talent doesn't seem to match their race times/performances...the season is still young.
