2019 XC ALL STANCO TEAM

For the seventh year the XC season wraps up with the naming of the All StanCo team. As with the past several years, the team members were decided by the StanCo coaches who all had the opportunity to vote.

I have a few things I noted about this year's team. There was certainly a power shift this season from the dominance of the larger schools to smaller schools. Only 8 of the twenty members this year hail from D1 or D2 schools. Downey, Modesto High and Gregori combined have grabbed half (or more) of the spots in some years. This year there are only 2 from Downey and 2 from Gregori. It was Oakdale that snagged 5 of the spots.

Something that swayed the selections was the decision by Pitman (StanCo #1) to move its boys down to F/S for SJS--where they won the SJS Soph D2 title. Gregori (StanCo #1) did the same thing with its girls and they won the SJS F/S title. By my estimation at least 3 of Pitman's boys and one of Gregori's girls easily would have made the StanCo teams if they had run varsity at the end of the year. This fact along with the acknowledgement that 14 of the 20 StanCo members will be returning next season show that the future of StanCo XC is indeed bright.

One other note. It is not unusual for a Frosh girl to make the team. Indeed this season Chloe Cook (Gregori) and Maci Day (Pitman) are both Frosh.   This season a frosh boy made the team--Caleb Cavanaugh (Oakdale). No frosh boy had made the team in any of the past seven years. I have been covering StanCo running for 11 years, the last boy that may have run well enough for such an accolade was probably Keaton Crowder (Hughson) in 2009
