LEAGUE MEET PREVIEW

There are 21 StanCo teams competing in XC over seven different leagues. Honestly some of the leagues I know more intimately than others. In this article I will attempt to describe the standing for the StanCo teams heading into their respective league meets.

CCAL--the 6 largest schools in StanCo comprise this league (Turlock, Modesto, Enochs, Gregori, Pitman, and Downey). In the first 2 CCAL clusters Gregori won both the boys' and girls' races. I don't see any reason for that to change. They will each likely sweep the team competition.

Pitman was second and Downey was 3rd for the girls in both clusters. Modesto, however, I believe may have the second best team if they run Frosh Yanitza Escoto in the Varsity race. Individually Maddie Kackley (Gregori) won Cluster 2 and Mavleen Mann (Pitman) won Cluster 1 (that last time Kackley lost a race). The race is between these two; and one thing is for certain, the course record (Monica Frailing Downey 17:46  2004) could be in jeopardy. There could be as many as 6 runners who go sub-20:00 for the race.

On the boys' side Modesto was 2nd and Downey 3rd at both clusters. Modesto always runs better as the year progresses and closed to within ten points of Gregori at Cluster 2. I think it will be under 10 points, but Gregori will squeak by this time. Modesto may close that gap even further by SJS though. Individually Alan Guerrero (Modesto) won both previous clusters and Jack Duchala (Gregori) was 2nd. The top 5 spots were identical at both clusters. Compared to the past two years this is a weaker/slower group. Guerrero and Duchala may be the only two who break the elite 16:30 barrier whereas last year there were 5.

WAC--StanCo schools are Beyer, Grace Davis, Ceres, and Johansen. This league still runs dual meets (instead of cluster meets). Pacheco boys swept through the dual meets with Beyer suffering its only loss to Pacheco. LosBanos is way ahead of the pack on the Ladies' side. Connor Farrow and Brady Cardozo (Beyer) and Aaron Alarcon and Daniel Yepez (Ceres) are all probably in the top 10 males. Yara Andujo-Velez (G Davis) is also among the top ten for the ladies. The race will be at River Bluff in Ceres, so the Ceres runners may have a slight edge. Pacheco did not compete on this course this season.

CCC--The two competing StanCo schools are Central Valley and Patterson. For the boys Merced won both of the clusters with Buhach Colony finishing second. The final meet is at Buhach so it may be a bit closer, but Merced is very solid and will easily win. On a great day CV could place 4th and Patterson 5th. Individually Cole McKain (Merced) should easily win. Christian Balderas (CV) could place in the top 5 but will need to run smarter than he did in the second cluster.

On the girls' side Atwater won both clusters by 12 over Merced. Atwater should sweep but it will be close. BC placed 3rd at both clusters and may pick up a few points running on their home course. Patterson placed 5th in both clusters and CV was 6th. Quinn Hagerman (Merced) is the top individual runner and should be returning to the State meet.

VOL--Oakdale and Central Catholic are the two StanCo teams. East Union won the first two clusters for the boys with Sierra second. Oakdale was 3rd in the first cluster but slid to 4th at the second one. Jesse Hurtado (Sierra) won the first two clusters. Dustin Chavez (Oakdale) should place in the top 5 with Tanner Cusano (Oakdale) close behind. This meet is on a ranch just outside of Oakdale so perhaps the Mustangs have a slight edge there.

For the ladies Oakdale won both the earlier clusters with Sierra placing second. Kayden Legan and Haleigh Humble (Oakdale) will compete for the individual title. Hannah Beth Norman (Oakdale) will be about tenth. The team title will be decided however by the placement of Mustang's #4 and #5 runners. Central Catholic has some descent young ladies. Ashley Sams (CC) could place around 6th.

TVL--Riverbank and Hughson are the StanCo schools. Hughson boys and girls swept the first two clusters. On the boys' side the races have been a free-for-all. Cluster 2 saw three teams all score 68 pts behind the Huskies 58. Needless to say it will be fun to watch as Livingston, Ripon, and Hilmar all chase the Huskies. Individually Bennie Dimas and Abe Alsaidi (Ripon) will likely compete for the victory. Miguel Ramos and Austin Hoach (Hughson) will likely be in the top 5 with Riverbank's Ramon Rosas close behind.

On the VG side Hughson barely held off Livingston at both clusters. Emily Fife (Hughson) and Briana Briones (Escalon) have been sparring in the first two meets. Elizette Ysais was 3rd in both, but she has been injured. Taylor Scheuber and Jessie Lawrence (Hughson) both could be in the top 5. The Huskies may need a solid performance from veteran Kinsey Langley to hold on for the victory especially if Ysais doesn't run.

SAL--Orestimba, Denair, and Waterford are the StanCo teams. For the boys Waterford won both the cluster meets with Orestimba and Delhi as the closest competitors. Jonathan Staley (Waterford) and Hakycon Park (Ripon Christian) will compete for the title. Evan Espinoza (Waterford) will likely place third.

Orestimba won both the clusters over Waterford for the ladies. Madeline Tree (Orestimba) outdistanced Waterford's Jaecelyn Romero to take both the previous victories and the final meet will likely play out the same way.

CCAA-- Big Valley and and Turlock Christian are the StanCo teams. I have limited results from the previous meets. BUT...I believe that BVC has the best boys' team. Their top runners Peter and Robert Pacheco will compete against Turlock Christian's David Lund and Millennium's Carson Edwards for the individual title. On the Ladies' side Dakota Voortman (BVC) won the last cluster
