The south SJS has never been a hot bed of distance running depth. However I have been touting for years that if all of the best teams and the best runners competed in their best events, the field would be strong and challenging; and the times would be fast. Unfortunately this event has conflicted every year with Bronco Distance Carnival, a premier event for distance runners in the SJS. This year the only StanCo or Merced team heading to Bronco is Riverbank. Additionally Merced HS bypassed their own County Championship (I am unsure of the rationale)...Losing RBK and Merced in the distance events is HUGE. Merced easily could have swept the three boys' events and RBK and Merced runners combined would have been favored in the girls' events.
UPDATE: more bad news for the distance competition at this meet--the Gregori Distance squad will be bypassing County Clash in favor of the Dublin Distance Fiesta. Merced is there too. Atwater is entered at Dublin. I am unsure if Atwater's runners will be competing in both events or only at Dublin.
So I lament and say again that if everyone stayed home and ran at County Clash I believe that the competition would be solid and the times would be fast.
With that said lets preview who should be running and how the two counties stack up against each other.
VG 800m
The top 7 qualifying times came from StanCo runners (and that was with defending champ Arielle Names running in the 400m). I would watch out for Salsig who ran that time out of the slow/first heat. Thrown in with everyone else she could take the title.

Again 8 of the top 10 came from the StanCo meet on what was a cold night. Hopefully Friday will produce better times due to better weather. Farias may not be producing remarkable times but he has senior maturity and new found confidence

StanCo comes in with 8 of the top ten teams here. Rivas has to be the favorite, but Hart has run times equal to his and Keith will out kick anyone if he can stay close.
