Mikayla Florez |
First we'll start with the ladies. Mikayla Florez (Riverbank) at #1 is perhaps the only non-debatable placement on either list. She is heads and tails the best runner in the county and one of the top in the section. Mya Torres (Gregori)won both MMC cluster meets. Although she is running slower times than last year (against a weaker field) she is still an enormous talent. Lupe Ventura (Patterson) is the top runner in the WAC. The Riverbank foursome behind Florez is difficult to separate. Depending on the race, course, and week, different RBK runners have stepped up; but they all have earned a spot on the list.
Mendoza, Maravilla, Torres |
2. Mya Torres (Gregori)
3. Savannah Mendoza (Modesto)
Lupe Ventura |
5. Nicole Warwick (Modesto Christian)
6. Sabrina Garcia/Kimberly Ruvalcaba (Riverbank)
Garcia and Warwick |
8. Torrey Maravilla (Gregori)
9. Joslyn Beliera/Haley Richardson (Riverbank)
Where were TVL #1 and #2 races held?
ReplyDeleteLegion park by the airport
ReplyDeleteSorry, Scott. Subs won't end anything. If my kids give anything more than an 85% effort on that day, I'll kick their butts.
ReplyDeleteGet all of these local teams to the Hughson Supercross and we'll figure things out ;)
Looking at the times I assume TVL and MMC run different courses at Legion Park. Am I right?
ReplyDeleteTVL runs the 5K course at Legion (the same course as the Sierra Inv). When the WAC runs there they run this course too. The MMC runs at different (and shorter) course 3.03 mi. It is certainly debatable but there is maybe a 40 sec conversion between the two courses. It is also true that schools in the lower divisions (Hughson and RBK) have somewhat of a luxury at sub sections that the MMC schools do not have. The smaller schools probably do not have to go all out at subs because their competition is so much weaker than in D1 and D2. Gregori is the only other school that might be able to utilize this strategy at subs...so the great ranking debate may never be settled...too bad that there is never any debate in BCS college football : ) I welcome your opinions--bring it on.
ReplyDeleteAt Stanford Invite Maravilla (20:39) ran a faster time than Mendoza (20:43) and was three seconds behind Torres (20:36). MMC #2 Maravilla (19:34) finished third behind Mendoza (19:31) and Torres (19:26). Isn't #8 spot a little low? I have yet to see any of these girls run nor do I know any of them. Just going by results posted on here. Curious I guess.
ReplyDeleteAlso, is Maravilla a freshman? I don't remember her running last year.
ReplyDeleteShe is a Soph
DeleteMaravilla did not run last year. I do think she is a Frosh (I'd have to check). I don't show that Mendoza ran at Stanford (maybe I completely missed that). Either way, Maravilla has not beaten Mendoza head to head. It is possible if all these girls ran head to head that she would place 4th. It is also possible that she wouldn't be in the top ten. It isn't an exact science. The same argument could be made to move the TVL girls up ahead of Mendoza. Thank you for the comments, I am enjoying the discussion.
ReplyDeleteYou were right Maravilla beat Mendoza at Stanford by 4 seconds--but they were in different races and Savannah won the two head to head meetings...
ReplyDeleteI'm not saying she deserves to be ranked above Mendoza. I just thought her ranking is a little low because her times are just behind Mendoza's and Torres'. But like you said it isn't an exact science......that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I probably have an MMC bias. That is probably why I placed Mendoza in 3rd. Maravilla could have been 4th (easily) but is that because I am bias...So I put the TVL group in there. They are as close to each other as Mendoza and Maravilla are...it is a tough call...we are back to I wish they all ran head to head. Thank you for your continued comments. At least one person is reading this stuff. Any comments about the boys?
DeleteWhy dont you have Jonathen Belria with those group of Gregori Kids or even Brooks? I believe based off his 3 mile time in Hawaii he is capable of being on the list.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Jonathen is very capable but hasn't run as well so far this XC season as he did in track. His time at Artichoke was the same as Isaac Gonzalez of Pitman (I considered them both for the list). However Those Gregori boys ran faster than Jonethen at Willow Hills at the start of the year. I have never seen the Hawaii course and no one from StanCo except Riverbank has ever run on it, so it is difficult to use it for comparison. Moses and Alcantara ran 50 to 60 seconds faster than Beliera in their respective league meets. Even with a 40 sec conversion he may be a step or two behind them.
DeleteYou obviously are very knowledgeable--who am I arguing/discussing with??
DeleteA family relative of his
ReplyDeleteThere is no questioning that he is a very talented young man--as are most of the RBK athletes. Their coach does a great job preparing them.
DeleteI'm no one special just another high school sports enthusiast. (The comment about Belria was left by another anonymous person.) Enjoying the blog, keep up the great work.
