SJS MASTERS (Prelims and Finals)

This was the last week of track for me as no StanCo distance runners qualified for the State Meet. It has certainly been a solid season and I will write a summary article in the near future. This write up is solely about the Section Masters meet (Prelims and Finals).

5/25/17 SJS MASTERS PRELIMS, ElkGrove HS, Elk Grove
With the 800m being the only distance race contested in the Prelims, the StanCo results are minimal.

VG 800
Sara Steven with a solid effort in the Prelims
 8. Briseida Garcia (Gregori) 2:17.57 (qualified)
14. Sara Stevens (Oakdale) 2:18.59

VB 800m
Anthony Vazquez PRs in the Prelims
12. Anthony Vazquez (Central Catholic) 1:57.88 (qualified)

5/26/17 SJS MASTERS FINALS, ElkGrove HS, Elk Grove
This was it! The top three in each event would qualify for State and everybody else would go home for the summer. Qualifying to get here is an accomplishment but everyone participating is looking to extend their season another week.

VG 1600m
Emily Fife (Hughson) surprisingly led this race at the 400m mark. I think this psyched her out a bit as she lost some focus in the middle of the event. She still finished with a very respectable time.

15. Emily Fife (Hughson) 5:16.42
20. Mavleen Mann (Pitman) 5:32.98

VG 800m
Briseida Garcia ran the first 400m in 64 sec and led the race. This early pace may have been a bit too quick as she faded over the final 180m from 1st to eventually 4th, just missing a qualifying spot.

VB 800m
Anthony Vazquez (Central Catholic) had PRed the nigh before. If he had been able to repeat that effort he would have been in the mist of the pack in the finals. As it was, he trailed from the gun and struggled to keep up.

11. Anthony Vazquez (Central Catholic) 2:00.19

VG 3200m
The duo from Hughson entered the race with two of the slowest qualifying times. They were both hoping to PR and break 12. Elizette would heart-breakingly just miss that goal.
Ysias and Campos in the 3200m
20. Esmeralda Campos (Hughson) 11:48.88
22. Elizette Ysias (Hughson) 12:02.00

VB 3200m
Santiago Ruiz just misses a spot at State
With the only three entrants here being the only three StanCo boys to break 10min this season, the trio was up for the challenge of racing against the Valley's best male distance runners. With the exception of one runner, the pace was fairly slow and played out well for the local guys. Santiago even led the pack for several laps. It was the final BIG push to the line that left Mason and Santiago a step behind. All three local boys PRed for their efforts.

Mason Reeves break 9:30 for the first time
6. Santiago Ruiz (Gregori) 9:23.27  (#11 all-time StanCo)
10. Mason Reeves (Gregori) 9:29.29  (#14 all-time StanCo)
17. Tomas Virgen (Patterson) 9:40.24
