WEEK 3 (Sierra Inv and Lowell Inv)

A bit of a loll this week. Some runners still have yet to have a real race--some have had three. It will all change in week 4 with VOL, CCC, and MMC all having clusters next Wednesday.

Week 3 saw only 2 major meets for StanCo schools. Beyer and Hughson fled the hot smokey valley and headed to the cooler climes of Golden Gate Park for the Lowell Inv.   Turlock, Pitman, Oakdale, Gregori, Waterford, Ceres, Grace Davis, Johansen, and Patterson all ran full teams at the Sierra Inv. Downeo, Modesto, and Riverbank each ran a handful of individuals on the Legion Park course.

SIERRA INV
With Riverbank, Downey, Modesto, and Turlock all slated to compete in this meet, it would have been an amazing opportunity for the best VG teams in the south valley to run head to head against each other to settle a long standing debate of which team is the best(at least for this season); but it wasn't meant to be. With that disappointment aside, there was some quality racing at this meet.

Victorious Turlock VG team
On the VG side it was all Turlock, missing one of their top runners and still easily taking the top team status. 1. Turlock 51; 5. Pitman 133; 8. Oakdale 199; 12. Gregori 295

Salsig, Varela, Fredeen and Bazan
1. Rachel Victor (Plesant Grove) 20:29
11. Hope Salsig (Turlock) 21:44
13. Maria Varela (Turlock) 21:46
14. Kristen Aguilar (Oakdale) 21:48
16. Ade Fredeen (Turlock) 21:52
17. Priscilla Bazan (Pitman) 21:58
Places 18 and 19 say Johansen but these are runners that entered the chute after 2 miles (instead of 5K)
21(19). Meghan Hopkins (Turlock) 22:11
23(21) Sofia Andres (Turlock) 22:12
24(22) Macie Erickson (Turlock) 22:13
27(25) Victoreya Maravilla (Gregori) 22:21
30(28) Bianca Garcia (Pitman) 22:43
32(30) Kyannah Hernandez (Oakdale) 22:58

3rd place Turlock VB team
On the boys' side Turlock was also the top local team but not to the same degree of dominance as the girls' team. 3. Turlock 165; 5. Gregori 195; 11. Patterson 258; 12.  Pitman 265; 17 Oakdale; 19. Ceres

LOWELL INV
On the VG side Hughson is beginning to gel with the return of veteran Taylor Gray. They finished 6th out of 18 teams. The questions is, "Are they good enough to take on RBK?" I am still not convinced.

1. Cynthia Rosales (Piner) 18:09.5
22. Kinsey Langley (Hughson) 20:03.1
34. Abigayle Mitchell (Hughson) 20:30.4

58. Heavyn Herroz (Hughson) 21:06.6
59. Taylor Gray (Hughson) 21:06.9

On the VB side there were two different races that seemed to be about the same level of competition. Both Beyer and Hughson competed in the same race. As a team the Huskies placed 14th out of 25 teams and the Patriots were 23rd.

  1. Yeah, a bit of a dig at us for not running at Sierra. Sorry, I've never liked the legion park course, too much of a road race. I've always liked the coaches and athletes from Sierra and would not mind supporting their program with my entry fees, but why would I pay 200 bucks to run that same, hot, dusty loop that I don't like and have to run 3 times alread, when we could go spend a day in GG park then hit the beach after?

The thing is, there could be a great, true, challenging, fair, CC course at Legion. Perhaps the coaches of the various leagues should put their heads togehter and map something out. I've got one worked up in my head, but I'd love to bat it around with others.

    1. This is kind of what I'd had in mind for at least a decade. Way better for parents and spectators, way less paved bike path. Would require marshals at 2 street crossings.

    2. No dig intended at all--I wholly support coaches taking their teams out of the valley to compete against different athletes and on different courses. It is those trips that bond teams together. I am sorry about whatever you read into my write up
