2023 WEEK 12 SJS Championship

This is the meet that most of the teams were trying to get to (well not Oakdale, for those boys this meet isn't even a speed bump). After setting a record (for my StanCo time period) for the number of StanCo State meet participants, this year that number will likely drop back to about 18. So, the point I am trying to make is that this is THE meet of the season for most of these athletes.

I wrote that before the meet. I actual number of StanCo qualifiers  for the State meet is 19...

D1 VG (the top 2 teams qualified for State)
Competing StanCo teams were Modesto, Pitman, and Turlock with runners from Downey and Gregori.

The story here was who would come out on top in the cross-town rivalry between Pitman and Turlock . Pitman won that battle technically. But the win happened only because Turlock's #2 girl Daizy Gonzalez was disqualified for bumping another runner or in technical terms,  purposely impeding another runner's path as they were finishing. This is a real thing, but I have never seen it enforced in an XC meet.

Competing StanCo teams were Downey, Enocs, Pitman, Modesto and Turlock with a runner from Gregori.

The story here was that Turlock qualified to State as a team (I think for the first time ever. I don't think anyone saw this happening (other than the Bulldog faithful). Half way through the race they were in 6th...but an amazing rally over the final final found them in 3rd and planning a trip to Fresno.

D3 VB (the top 3 teams qualified for State)
The competing StanCo teams were from Oakdale and Beyer.

The questions here were how much would Oakdale win by and could Beyer find some of the magic that allowed them to qualify for State last year...the answers were A LOT and nope. Oakdale's Alsaidi had a terrible race. He ran thirty seconds slower than his best time on this course. As a team however they ran only 7 seconds slower than last year's State championship team. Their top 6 were the six fastest StanCo boys on the day...Their #6 boy who has been an "also ran" all season, has improved to the point that he would be the top boy on any of the other 22 high schools in the county. YES, YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY!
