2023 XC PreSeson All StanCo (Boys Individuals and Team)

Every year I attempt to pick and All StanCo team prior to the season even beginning. And every year by the end of the season it comes to light that some of my selections were spot on and others definitely missed the mark. The biggest factor in my missed selections is injuries...hopefully it is obvious that I can not predict that. I also rely heavily on times from the previous track season,  and some athletes just do better in track than XC (or vice versa). Anyway here we go...

MY TOP TEN
 OMAR ALSAIDI (Oakdale) 12th
--was All StanCo (ASC) track in 23 and XC in 22. Omar will without a doubt challenge for the Section and State D3 title. His top track times are 4:21 and 9:12
ISMAEL DOMINGUEZ (Oakdale) 11th--was ASC track in 22 and 23; ASC XC in 21. Last XC season Ismael ran for Gregori and was undefeated in CCAL competition. He will be required to sit out the first third of the season, but that should make little difference. His top track marks are 2:07, 4:41, and 9:29

JACKSON OLIVEIRA (Oakdale) 12th
--was ASC track in 22 and 23; ASC XC in 22. His top marks are 4:42 and 9:30. With his brother injured last year, Jackson really improved. For the Mustangs to repeat as State champs they will need even more from him this season.
MASON OLIVEIRA (Oakdale) 12th--was ASC track in 22 and 23. His top mark is 9:42. After last year's accident/injury it is amazing that he can even still run. He spent a very frustrating year building back to a new PR in the 2 mi.
MEHTAAB DHILLON (Modesto) 12th--was ASC track in 23 and ASC XC in 22. His top track marks are 2:05, 4:38, and 9:57. Mehtaab will battle several Turlock runners for the top spot in the CCAL, but if he wants to qualify for State he will need to step it up.
TEDDY SANTOS (Turlock) 11th--was ASC track in 23. The improvement that Teddy made between XC and track last year was amazing. With the same distance coach his development should continue. His top track times were 4:38 and 9:59
JACOB CAVANAUGH (Oakdale) 11th--was ASC track in 23 and XC in 22. His top track times are 2:07, 4:38, and 9:58. Of the top 5 Oakdale boys Jacob has the most potential to improve.
JACKSON OLSEN (Beyer) 12th--His top track times are 2:02 and 4:30. After trips to State these past two seasons with Beyer's team, Jack will need to step up his game to qualify as an individual this season. There have been some health and confidence issues that he will need to overcome to reach his full potential.
DIEGO CIBRIAN (Grace Davis) 11th--his top marks are 4:33 and 10:00. Diego might have been the most improved StanCo runner during track. I think he finally realized that yes he was as good (or better) than all of those other runners.
JACOB NGUYEN (Grace Davis) 11th--His top marks are 2:06 and 4:37. This last spot was the toughest to select. Jacob has fought through some injuries but my gut tells me that he has the potential to be one of the top runners in the section.

THE NEXT ELEVEN
DANIEL ZARAGOZA (Turlock) 12th
--his top marks are 2:06, 4:33, and 10:34
EZEKIEL LLOYD (Enochs) 12th
--2:01, 4:40
 EDGAR ALVAREZ DIAZ (Patterson) 11th
--2:07, 4:36.
DOMINIC HAUPT (Hughson) 12th
--2:06, 4:40. With the whole Husky team graduating (except for him) there are some big shoes for him to fill. Still he may be the fastest returning TVL XC runner
BEHNIYA ESMAEILABADI (Turlock) 12th
--10:08. He was injured for much of track but there is no doubt he has the potential (and desire) to run even faster.

FINN JOHNSTON (Downey) 12th--10:13
 ABRAHAM SARMIENTO (Grace Davis) 11th
--10:15. Another runner who made an amazing improvement during track last season.
 JORGE MANDUJANO (Patterson) 12th
--10:20
 JACKSON HALL (Turlock) 12th
--10:22

JULIAN HERNANDEZ (Turlock) 12th
--2:03

SIMRIT SHERGILL (Modesto) 12th
--2:06

HONORABLE MENTION
RYAN ARIAS (Turlock) 12th--10:27
ABNER GONZALEZ (Oakdale)12th-- 10:27
LOGAN PETTY (Turlock) 11th--injured for almost all of track

TEAM PREDICTIONS
1. OAKDALE
2. TURLOCK
3. MODESTO
4. ENOCHS
5. GRACE DAVIS
5. PATTERSON

  1. Do u think Oakdale wins state again?

  2. I think they are the front runner but they still need to avoid injuries

  3. Grace Davis finishes ahead of Beyer? I think I can see why you might think this. I believe the problem for both of them is the same, their 4th and 5th man makes them vulnerable. Both need their respective athletes to step up and assume the challenge.

  4. Some of that was based on track. Beyer's #2 played baseball. He does seem to have started off XC very strong though and they have picked up a solid frosh runner. GD's #1 is still recovering from an injury...At full strength I now think it will be tight between these two

    1. Agree. The WAC league should be interesting this year. I think there will be four teams that will be closer in strength and that will make it more competitive this year as opposed to last year when only two teams really had a chance to compete for the top spot.

  5. Do you think Turlock comes top 5 at sections? I think that they have the potential however I think state is out of the equation for them. Teams like mcclatchy, Davis, Lincoln and even oak ridge have too much starpower up front for Turlock to keep up with. Should be a fun season for them I’m excited to see how they do!

  6. Right now agree with you. It is relatively easy to qualify for SJS in D1, but it is difficult to get one of the State berths. Gregori was able to do it twice but had 2 sub 9:20 runners
