Thursday was the SJ Section Masters qualifying meet and Friday was the Masters Finals. Qualifiers in the 800m had to run on Thursday to get to Friday's meet. Entrants in the 1600m and the 3200m both moved straight to Friday's finals. The top three finishers in each event qualified for the State Championship meet

Briseida Garcia (Gregori) was the only StanCo distance competitor on the first day of competition. She went out hard in her heat and led until the home stretch where she was out-kicked. In finishing 2nd in her heat and 4th overall she nearly equaled her PR and qualified for Friday's finals.

FRIDAY'S MASTERS FINALS
The top three finishers in Friday's events would qualify for the State Championship meet. Realistically only Briseida Garcia (Gregori) in the 800m was really in the running for one of these spots. The other StanCo competitors were running for pride and PRs.

Again it was only Briseida competing against 11 others for three spots to the State meet. She took the early lead at 150m and held it through the first circuit. However the pace was a bit slow and about the 500m mark everyone took it up several notches and began passing Briseida. She gamely tried to hang on as one by one seven different runners passed her in the wild sprint to the finish. Her 2:17.48 was not a PR but was still one of the top section times for the season.

The only StanCo competitor was Emily Fife (Hughson). Emily is a 9th grader and is still learning the competitive strategies to accompany her raw talent. In the 1600m she gave up a lot of ground to the pack and in the final 200m attempted to gain some of it back. Her time was just off of her D45 Sectional mark.

Michael Keith (Enochs) was the only StanCo runner in this event. Michael had PRed in the DI meet with an impressive 4:28.7. Had he run that time today, he would have been with a solid pack. Given his kicking ability, I am sure he could have notched another PR. However it was obvious after the first lap that Michael wasn't feeling it. He cruised home to a fairly slow time that shouldn't overshadow what was a fantastic season.

Kim Ruvalcaba (Riverbank) has been the top female distance runner in StanCo for the last two years. But like Michael Keith it was clear early in the race that the night's before graduation celebration probably took a toll. In spite of these results I will always remember Kim's dedication to her team and her tough competitive spirit.

Tomas Virgin was the only StanCo runner in the metric 2 mile. He had just broken the 10min barrier for the first time in the D45 meet. I was hoping that the quick pace of the 3200m pack could pull him along to another PR time. Tomas ran a solid race but fell a few seconds short of his PR.
