5/3/15 WEEK's HIGHLIGHTS (CCC #3, Sheldon Dist Carnival, Sac MOC, Dual Meets)

CCC CLUSTER #3  (4/29 at Atwater)
For the third time this year the teams of the CCC met on the same oval to compete for a portion of the league championship. Pitman and Turlock seem to be gaining team momentum as the season progresses as they finished 1st and 2nd respectively for both sexes.

Enochs at Gregori
This was the meet I attended this week. Both Gregori boys and girls had league titles on the line. The Enochs Eagles took the Gregori boys to the final event before the Jaguars were victorious.

Clair Seymour--the MMC front-runner in the 200m and 400m has explored the 800m the past two weeks with very interesting results. I believe that her 2:28 put her in the 2nd or 3rd slot in the MMC 800m...and she is barely learning how to run this event.

SHELDON DISTANCE CARNIVAL
Even several years ago when this meet was just starting out it was a solidly run, fun event. It was designed to provide a high quality alternative for those distance runners who didn't qualify for the Meet of Champions. As more and more teams are discovering this event the times and competition have greatly improved. This year Hughson, Modesto, and Riverbank competed from StanCo. Personally I believe that this meet is the superior choice over the Bronco Distance Carnival. If the local schools bypassed Bronco, it would free up their runners to compete at County Clash, and then later they could all still compete at Sheldon. I think the times below more than support my statements.

SACRAMENTO MEET OF CHAMPIONS
This is one of the premier track meets in Northern California. Although several StanCo track athletes competed and fared well...only three StanCo distance runners competed (several years ago I recall there were more than 10). All three athletes ran in the earlier (slower and less exclusive) races. They competed well in their races/heats but none PRed.

  1. Agree completely on the need to not go to Bronco to find good distance competition if we all stayed home there would be plenty at county clash. In all honesty, most of our kids don't need to be hitting super hot times in March anyway. We really enjoyed the Sheldon meet and will be back again

  2. To add a few more times on relay splits: Jared Williams split 2:09, twice (DMR and 4x800) and Wyatt Mitchell Split 2:08 on the 4x8 (a 4+ second PR after running an 18 second PR (4:54) in the 1600. Jaymie Jackson split 4:58 on the DMR and Daniel Yanez split 4:52

    1. Yes I saw your relay split times that were posted. I was disappointed that the relay team results weren't posted

  3. The problem with the County Clash v. Bella is that only a few kids qualify to the County Clash. What do we do with the other 20 distance kids who don't get to run? Plus, never underestimate the bonding effect of a long bus ride and a stop at In n Out. I feel that is important for our distance runners, and it gives us an opportunity to pull other runners into the ranks that may run cross the next year. As far as times go, Sheldon is over a month later. Shouldn't they be running faster? Many of the kids that aren't going to be advancing to divisionals or even league are already starting to taper. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of the County Clash, and I hope Thad or whoever decides to move the date. We want to be a part of it, but I can tell you without any reservation that Bella is a really important meet for our cross country team.

Now that we will have our track next year, we are hoping to host a distance carnival/throwers challenge at Riverbank on the same date as Sheldon. We would like to start the distance portion around 7:00 or 7:30 and run all races under the lights and in the cool of the day. We probably wouldn't have as many events. Maybe 1600-3200-4x800 relay. We would try to have a break between the 3200 and the 4x800 for any kid who would like to double back from the 3200 to the 4x800. I would understand if some wanted to go up north and get away from the area, but I think many would support it in the area. What do you guys think?

    1. I think that the biggest draw of Bella Vista is that it is an opportunity to get a fast qualifying time for even bigger meets like Woody Wilson and SacMOC. Any of the kids who would be shooting for those meets could potentially have the same opportunity at County Clash IF EVERYBODY RAN. Yes I do still remember thos long bus rides fondly. I think that the F/S challenge is meant to fill the void for those who don't qualify for County (at least the younger ones)...Monte your own argument of tapering and missing the long bus ride would seem to work against you putting a meet on the same weekend as Sheldon. I think an earlier date would attract more participation.
