Stanford Inv

This weekend was a recovery opportunity for most of the StanCo schools as we approach the midway point of the season. However the ultra competitive Stanford Invitational was held today also, and the MoHi Panthers and a couple of past StanCo athletes (now in college) took to the compact golf course circuit.

COLLEGE RACES
Faith Makau (formerly of Enochs) running for UC Riverside is healthy and uninjured this year. She redshirted last year and is competing as a frosh. She led a trio of decorated former StanCo female runners in today's competition.

TVL # 2

Yesterday (9/24/14) was the second meeting this season for the TVL schools. Just as I said after the first MMC race...there is a reason why they actually run these races. Sometimes the results are simply shocking! More on that in a minute...
Ruvalcaba and Garcia

First I'll discuss the VG results. Kim Ruvalcaba (Riverbank) and Sabrina Garcia (Riverbank) went out hard and separated themselves from Ellie Waters (Ripon) and the rest of the runners. Waters made up ground on Garcia over the final mile, but she couldn't close the entire gap. On the team front, predictably it was all RBK.

2. Sabrina Garcia (Riverbank) 20:33
3. Ellie Waters (Ripon) 20:39
4. Nora Nash (Escalon) 21:29
5. Madison Mays (Hughson) 21:41
6. Haley Richardson (Riverbank) 22:00
7. Kayla Jacklich (Ripon) 22:29
8. Megan Warwick (Modesto Christian) 22:30
9. Joslyn Beliera (Riverbank) 22:40
10. Niclole Warwick (Modesto Christian) 22:48
11. Sierra Hernandez (Escalon) 22:55
12. Marisol Aguayo (Escalon) 23:01
13. Stephanie Bernal (Riverbank) 23:24
14. Leone Rivers (Escalon) 23:43
15. Taylor Gray (Hughson) 23:43

The individual completion was a 3 man race between Alex Norling (Ripon), Adan Chavez (Riverbank), and Daniel Yanez (Hughson). For over 2 miles the three were stride for stride. Chavez and Norling broke from Yanez, and then Norling broke from Chavez. Chavez made a hard push to catch Noorling but fell just short. As I mentioned, the boys' team results were shocking! After crushing the competition in TVL 1, Riverbank seemed like a lock to cruise through the season. A fluke injury to Emmanuel Chavez left them vulnerable and Hughson, with the return of Austin Zehr, jumped at the opportunity. Once the dust literally settled it was Hughson on the winning side of the 40 to 43 final score...AGAIN WOW!

13. Mason Miguel (Hilmar) 18:58
14. Diego Ruiz (Riverbank) 19:13
15. Kendall Camp (Riverbank) 19:19

Interestingly if the meet was scored as a dual meet Hughson still would have won 27-28. If it was judged on total time RBK would have edged out the Huskies 91:43 to 92:07. Needless to say it was a close competition.

WEEKEND ACTION

The competing StanCo teams were literally spread across the state this weekend. MoHi ran at the Mt Carmel meet in San Diego. Riverbank participated in Irvine at the Woodbridge Invitational. Gregori, Davis, Beyer, and Hughson ran at Golden Gate Park in SF. Pitman, Waterford, Central Valley, and Orestimba ran in the Gold Country at Frogtown.

The Riverbank boys and girls represented themselves well in the ultra competitive meet.

For the girls it was Kim Ruvalcaba leading the way with a 7th place finish. The girls placed 11th overall out of 24 teams.

FROGTOWN
Not many local teams ran here. It seems to decrease every year. I realize that it is a rough course and always seems to be very hot; but the reality is that if you want your team to qualify for the Section Meet or even the State Meet, they will have to compete well on this course.

Pitman, Waterford, Central Catholic, Central Valley, and Orestimba were the only StanCo schools that I saw in the results.

For the Small School VB race Danny Navarrete (Orestimba) finished in 20:00 for 61st place.

For the Large School VG race Nina Shahi (Pitman) placed 56th with a time of 25:11.

In the Large School VB race john Puffer (Pitman) placed 35th in 18:47 and Jose Bastidas (Central valley) placed 52nd in a time of 19:31.

MMC 1; CCC 1; VOL 1

MMC CLUSTER 1

Victorious Lady Knights
There is a reason that these races are actually run, and we don't just go off of past results...This past Wednesday 9/17 the MMC schools competed for the first time against each other this season...and some of the results were simply shocking to me. For the girls Downey CRUSHED what on paper was a very strong MoHi team. Downey put 9 runners in front of Modesto's 5th girl. It is the first time the Lady Knights have won an MMC Cluster. It is also the first time they have beaten the Panthers in XC since a 2009 dual meet shocker. Additionally these girls are young. There are only 2 seniors in the top 20 finishers and 8 are Frosh or Sophs. Some unseen factors in the results: it was very hot, the course was 40m (maybe 10 secs) shorter than the normal course, Mya Torres (Gregori) was ill, Torey Maravilla (Gregori) was leading after 2mi and injured her calf and DNF...

The Varsity Boys race was no less startling as MoHi stomped the defending champion Gregori team. The Jaguars took the top two spots. The Panthers countered with the next three places (and 5 in front of Gregori's third runner). Modesto usually improves as the season progresses, so Gregori better regroup quickly.

CCC CLUSTER 1
Coming off of impressive races at the Sierra Invitational the Turlock boys and girls must have been thinking about the possibility of a CCC title run. But it was Atwater squashing those hopes in resounding fashion in the first CCC Cluster on Wednesday 9/17 at Applegate Park in Merced.

For the VGs it was Frosh Arianna Lara Chavez (Turlock) breaking the tape to lead the Turlock Bulldogs to a second place finish. Atwater won the race by putting 5 runners in the top 13 (5 in front of Turlock's 3rd runner).

1. Arianna Lara Chavez (Turlock) 20:07
9. Makenzie Salyer (Turlock) 22:03

18. Cassie Derdivanis (Turlock) 23:02
19. Raveena Samra (Turlock) 23:03
20. Erin Knopp Sargoni (Turlock) 23:03.5

On the boy's side Merced swept the top three spots followed by Atwater's 4, 5, 9, 10, 11 showing. The Bears and Falcons would tie for the victory with The Turlock boys coming in a disappointing 3rd.

7. Javier Lara (Turlock) 17:18

VOL CLUSTER 1

The VOL schools squared off for the first time this year on Wednesday 9/17 at Legion Park in Modesto. The Oakdale Mustangs represented well by placing 3rd in the VB race and 2nd for the VGs.

For the girls it was Anna Perrone leading the team scoring by placing 6th overall.

8. Kyannah Hernandez (Oakdale) 22:33
18. Kristin Aguilar (Oakdale) 24:09

Sierra Invitational

The only meet of any note this week was the Sierra Invitational this past Saturday at Legion Park in Modesto. Thirteen schools from Stanislaus County participated, although it should be said that heavy weights Downey and Modesto ran but a fraction of their athletes. Given that, there were some interesting and predictable results.

Some notes on the non-varsity races...Josue Perez (Modesto), Sonia and Hilda's brother won the Frosh race. He will likely be the top cat at MoHi in the years to come. That may not be enough because it was Gregori with the Frosh boys team edge. Pitman Frosh girls placed 5 in the top 11 for the large schools. The balance of XC power may shift in the future of  the city of Turlock.

Medina

VARSITY BOYS

Mario Medina (Gregori) placed 2nd in a more than respectable time and appeared as if he held back. It was the Gregori boys again flexing to beat all the local teams (and that was without 2 of their top 4 runners--Jonathan Alcantara DNF and Jeremy Hart must sit out to Oct 6th because he transferred). They have up front talent and depth. If they can stay healthy they should ease through the MMC and make a serous run at State.

5. Anthony Arauza (Gregori) 17:20

49. Erik Sousa (Turlock) 18:52
50. Ara Moosekian (Turlock) 18:52
51. Juan Ortega (Gregori) 18:53
52. Thi Bui (Enochs) 18:54

As you can see, for local teams this was basically a tri meet between 3 of the top five county teams (excluding MoHi, holding out their top runners; and Riverbank who was not competing). Gregori was missing two of their top 4 and they still easily handled the other two teams.

If I include the Riverbank times over the same course in TVL #1 it is possible to compare the RBK Bruins against the other three teams. I can already hear Coach Woods saying that this isn't a fair comparison...well it really isn't an apples to oranges comparison...it is more like comparing tangerines to oranges--and it may it as close a comparison that is possible until the sub-section meet. So if I throw RBK into the mix here are the results:
GREGORI--1, 4, 9, 13, 15, 16, 20 = 42pts
RIVERBANK--2, 3, 10, 17, 24 = 56pts
ENOCHS--6, 7, 11, 12, 21 = 57pts
TURLOCK--5, 8, 14, 18, 19, 22, 23 = 64pts

This Wednesday we'll see how MoHi fits into the mix.

VARSITY GIRLS
Maravilla

Torrey Maravilla (Gregori) was the top local finisher. But it was the tide of Turlock girls swamping all of the local competition. Also of note Grace Davis has a top notch frosh girl harking back to the pre-Gregori days: Ocean Goldman is already poised to be in the top 10 in the MMC. Gregori was missing #1 Mya Torres (who was ill); but even with her they will need runners 3, 4, and 5 to step up or they will be rolled by MoHi on Wednesday.

10. Arianna Lara Chavez (Turlock) 21:42

Turlock's #4-7 runners

Just like the boys it is possible to compare Riverbank to Turlock using the results from TVL #1. Surprisingly it is Turlock coming out on top 27 to 33 in a head to head dual meet.

TURLOCK--2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 = 27
RIVERBANK--1, 3, 6, 11, 12 = 33

TVL 1
First of all, the results I have for this meet are incomplete. In spite of this fact I will try to write up the meet to the best of my ability.
Norling with Adan Chavez and Emmanuel Chavez
For the boys The Adan-Emmanual Chavez (Riverbank) show continues to roll along. They led the pack of RBK boys over what to my eyes looked like a much weaker field of boys than in the most recent past years.

WILLOW HILLS
This early season event is an opportunity for your team to tour the section championship course. Coaches may enter athletes in the individual event or in a five-person relay. The non-relay participates have the advantage of competing for position in a pack (like any other race). Whereas the relay runner often are on the course nearly alone--thus their time are somewhat slower. riverbank ran in the individual race and Hughson (boys) ran in the relay.

A couple of things to note here...The time by the Chavez brothers isn't far off of Zach Morrett's (Hughson) section winning time from last year--16:15. They are way ahead of the 17:10 that Zach ran in this same meet last year. Additionally Daniel Yanez in a full minute faster that what he ran at Sections last year.

On the girl's side Sabrina Garcia  (Riverbank) turned in the top local time. She ran 21:14 which is 67 seconds faster than she ran at Sections last year.

EARLY BIRD INV (Salinas)
This is a big early season Central Coast Section meet that Downey ran in this year. The meet is held at Toro Park outside of Salinas and the course is 3mi. Downey was the only StanCo team--and other than Escalon, they were the only Sac Joaquin section team. For and early season meet over and unfamiliar course there were some solid results turned in by some of the Knights.

The top girl's performer was Arielle Names who ran little over the summer but managed an impressive 20:40 which was good for 14th in the Junior Div.. Additionally newcomer/frosh Esmeralda Aguayo placed 21st in the frosh race--a 3mi race is a tough initiation for a freshman.

Arielle Names 20:40
Esmeralda Aguayo 21:26
Erika Martinez 21:38
Makaelyn Bickel 22:04
Esther Limon 22:19
Haylee Osgood 22:26
Meghan Matas 22:54

There are a couple of things to note here...The top 7 Downey runner are all non-seniors, with three being 9th graders. Additionally I would rate this as a way below par effort by Osgood. Hopefully she is running at her full potential soon. This team placed a combined 17th out of the 47 teams. Just the Jr team placed 3rd out of 15.

On the boys side the combined team placed 27th out of 50 teams--middle of the pack so to speak. The top mark was by Inteus Schiavo who placed 9th in the Soph race with a time of 17:07. Interestingly, Justin Goering who is definitely a senior, was entered as a junior and ran in the junior race.
